If I had to describe the movie with only one word I guess I'd use 'experienced. The people of Hollywood have clearly mastered their trade, and if an opportunity like "Real Steel" comes along they won't hesitate to use a lot of money and their best crew for the job. That is exactly what they have done here. The story is nicely paced, avoids clichés as much as it can. The father and son relationship tries to be honest and more realistic than what we're used to. The effects are top notch. The actors are perfectly fitted for their role, and if you let it, the movie will stir up some emotions and leave you with exactly what you were looking for - a break from reality.
I don't understand the people who accuse the movie for being cheesy and cliché. What did you expect from a movie that is about the father and son relationship and a robot? Wasn't decades of Hollywood cinema enough to see were that will be going? The question isn't weather it's "cliché" but weather it's a "good cliché. There are tons of movies coming out every year that try to have the same effect as "Real Steel" but fail miserably ( I am number four' as one example. And of course the ending will be all mushy and fuzzy! You can see that 10 minutes into the movie. Besides, all Spielberg movies are like that, and some of them are regarded as classics, where, in fact, all that separates them from this one is chance, I guess. I'm not saying "Spielberg" movies are bad, I'm saying this one's also good. I know he didn't direct the movie, but I have a strong hunch he had a big role in it.
If you are looking to get entertained all you need to do is lower your criteria a bit, get Tarkovski and Kubrick out of your head, and this movie will do the job. You can also have a kid with you.
